A love song for a wife

I was on my way home from work some time ago when I heard this song for the first time in radio IKIM.fm 91.5. I only know some basic Arabics, but I know enough to understand “zaujati uhibbuki, zaujati habibti…” How sweet, it’s a love song for a wife. I started to imagine MHH dedicating (or perhaps even singing?) this song to me, tee hee..

I googled it, and found this. This video clip has English subtitles. I don’t know enough Arabic to tell whether the translation did justice to the original lyrics. Such a soft and sweet song, with such soft and sweet lyrics.

MHH found the lyrics. Thanks, darling :)

Zawjati (My Wifeeey...)

“Uhibbuki misla maa anteee” I love you the way you are,
“Uhihbuki kaifa ma kunteee” I love you the way you were,

“Wa mahma kaana ,mahaa saara“ No matter what did or will happen
“Anti habeebati anteee” You are and will be My Darling.

“Zawjateee…” My Wifeeey…

“Anti habeebati anteee” You are and will be My Darling.

“Uhbbuki misla maa anteee” I love you the way you are,
“Uhibbuki kaifa ma kunteee” I love you the way you were,

“Wa mahma kaana ,mahaa saara“ No matter what did or will happen
“anti habeebati anteee” You are and will be My Darling.

“Zawjateee…” My Wifeeey…

“Halaali anti laa akhshaa adulan…an numaqteee…” You're my rightful wife, I don’t fear sin… I don’t care not about those who like to reproach and irritate me.
"Laqad azina zamaanulana bi wuslim ghayri mumbatteee” It is our destiny to be Together eternally.

“Saqaytil hubba fi qalbi bi husnil fa a’li was-samti” In my heart you instilled love With grace and good deeds.
“Yagheeb-us’-sa’adu innibti” Happiness vanishes when you disappear,
“Wa yasful a’yshu inji ti” Life brightens when you're there.

“nahaari kaadihum hatta izaa ma a’ttulil baytee” Hard is my day Until you return home.
“Laqituki fanjala anni duna ya izaaa tabassamteee” Sadness disappears When you smile.

“Uhibbuki misla maa anteee” I love you the way you are,
“Uhibbuki kaifa ma kunteee” I love you the way you were,

“Wa mahma kaana ,mahmaa saara“ No matter what did or will happen
“Antee habeebati anteee” You are and will be My Darling.

“Zawjateee…” My Wifeeey…
“Antee habeebati anteee” You are and will be My Darling.

“Tagiku bi al hyaatu iza bi aa yauman tabarramti” Life turns black When you're upset,
“Fa asssaa jaahidan hatta aw haqqi qaamaa tamannaytee” So I work hard To make your wish come true.

“Anaaee anti fal tanay bi jifhil hubbi maa ashtee” You're my happiness. May you be happy forever.
Fa roohanaa qadi talafa ka mislil ardhi wa annabteee Our souls are united Like soil and plants.

“Wa amali wa Yaa sakaanee Yaa unsi wa mulhimateee” ”You're my hope, my peace My good company and inspiration.
“yatibul a’eshu mahmaa daaqatil ayyaamu intibteee” Life is good, no matter how hard it is, When you're fine.

“Uhibbuki misla maa anteee” I love you the way you are,
“Uhibbuki kaifa ma kunteee” I love you the way you were,

“Wa mahma kaana ,mahaa…saaraa“ No matter what did or will happen
“Anti habeebati anteee” You are and will be My Darling.

“Zawjateee…” My Wifeeey…

SN Abdullah Hussain & Imam

(Saya suka online shopping! Menjimatkan masa :) )

Musim raya lepas, kami berpeluang menziarahi beliau. Saya bawa naskhah novel Imam saya untuk meminta beliau menurunkan tandatangannya. Dia bertanyakan saya, “Bagaimana buku ini?” Waktu itu, saya belum usai membacanya, baru sekadar dua bab. “Saya belum habis baca.” Sedikit tersipu-sipu.
Sebelum pulang, beliau menghadiahi saya senaskhah antologi cerpen beliau, Pahlawan Tak Bernama. Semoga Allah merahmati beliau.

His Very First Encyclopedia

I bought the first book from the set ‘My Very First Encylopedia – Disney Learning’ from the sales lady who came to the office and set up a booth in front of the koop. All 3 in the set were available then, but I thought I would try one first to see how it is.

Munief loves it. Even I love it! It’s so nice to look at the colourful and beautiful photos and layout printed on glossy paper inside. They are absolutely bright and brilliant! That’s the main strength of the book. The price of RM37 (retail price RM39.90) is so worth it for the 190 plus pages. There are 3 books in this set: Nature, Earth and Animals. I bought Nature first, and then Earth the second time the lady came. I wanted to buy Animals too, but it was sold out. Next time, then. Here is the link to the local publisher who bought the license, click on the ‘MORE’ to see the full catalogue. You can purchase from them directly, I think.

The reason why this set is relatively cheap is because a local company has bought the license from Disney and printed the books locally. I once searched for this book in the MPHOnline, and found one that costs RM59.90. That’s probably the imported version.

I wish there would be more businesses out there who would do this kind of thing: buy licenses for good books, and then print and distribute locally. It makes sense to me. Cheaper price for consumers, more volume and profit for both the original and local publishers (assuming the cheaper price will mean more books will be sold). Afterall, in this age of technology, the content of a book is just an email way. But I guess that’s also what makes the original publisher more wary. There are risks of piracy etc.

Balance Your Life With Teleworking

That title is actually the theme of eHomemakers SOHO Forum this year. It’s going to be held on 13th December 2008, and the fees are RM65 for registration before 30 November 2008 and RM75 afterwards.

The agenda is as follows:

8:00am - 9:00am : Registration
9.00am - 9.10am : Emcee Welcome Remarks
9.10am - 9.45am : "Cyber-Call Center - an eHomemakers' Dream"~ Chong Sheau Ching, ED, eHomemakers
9.45am - 10.15am : "Why telework with us?" A MNC which will be hiring teleworkers
10.15am - 10.45am : "Customer Service - A Nightmare or a Joy- the Malaysian Perspective"~ Alexandra Wong
10.45am - 11.15 am : Tea break
11.15am - 12.00pm : "How should you market yourself as a teleworker?"~ Hew Hui Shan
12.00pm - 1:00pm : The fundamental skills of a telemarketer~ Serena Foo
1.00pm - 2.00pm : Lunch
2:00pm - 2:30pm : Lucky Draw & Announcements
2.30pm - 4:10pm : Panel: "I took the plunge"~ Nor Azlina Ishak, Hew Hui Shan, Serena Foo, Hanniz Efni
4:10pm- 4.45pm : Tea
4.45pm - 5.30pm : Networking

I’m curious as to which MNC it is that will be hiring teleworkers. Why isn’t the name published in this agenda? Anyway, click here for more information.

The timing is not too ideal though. I’m sure some of us would probably be somewhere else, given that it is the Raya Haji week. I’ve been to their SOHO forum in 2006 and have shared some tips here.

It's yellow

This workstation tag is from Anamiraa. Here’s my little yellow cubicle, it’s only about 2m by 2m. It’s usually this messy, sorry to say. My department adopts the open office concept, so there are some 50-70 cubicles like this for us the kulicutives (a term I found quite funny, coined by a colleague). I was reminded of the bees’ hexagonal cells, especially because they are yellow, since I watched the Bee Movie some two weeks ago. Worker bees we are, indeed. Hopefully we are rajin like the bees too.

Notice the calculator on the desk? Nowadays, I only need to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, but I still use the same good old scientific calculator that has been with me for the past ten over years. And the blue bag under the desk on the left is my cooler bag for my EBM. I don’t get as much as I would have liked to anymore, but I still try to persevere. Behind me (not in photo) is the file cabinet. Otherwise, everything is the pretty much similar to an average workstation: a pc, photos of loved ones, quick reference to certain contact numbers, post-it notes, the in/out tray. Ok, now I’d like to pass the baton to Aina Ana, Mektwain, Ummu Auni, Limau Nipis, and Raiyan. Share with me what your workstation looks like, boleh?

The paradox of our time

The following is borrowed from a friend's blog (thanks JY!):

Comedian George Carlin’s viewpoint and the message that comes with it seem so appropriate.

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Highways, but narrower viewpoints.

We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less.

We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.

We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life.

We've added years to life not life to years.

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbour.

We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.

We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less.

We plan more, but accomplish less.

We've learned to rush, but not to wait.

We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.

These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.

Just take a moment and THINK about it.

Instant dadih

I have seen the instant dadih packets from my visits to the baking supplies shop many times previously, but I never bothered to try them. That is, until I tasted them at one of the raya visits to one of our relatives’ house.

The result is pretty good. They are a big hit, with the kids especially. Munief alone finished 3 or 4 of these little containers at one go. Of course, they are not as good as the one made from scratch, but they’re okay. And to tell you a little secret, I have actually tried to make dadih from scratch before, and it was a flop. So, I felt pretty good when this one turned out well (nevermind the fact that it’s so easy, an eight-year old can do it).

All you need is one packet of this instant dadih (360g, RM3.90), a can of evaporated milk (440ml, RM2.60), and water (I can’t remember now, 3 litres I think, it’s all on the packet instructions). One packet makes about 36 full little cups like the one above, so the cost is about 20 sen each cup (cost exclude the cup, which is about 10 sen each).

Cita-cita adik saya

“Axx rasa nanti bila Axx besar, nak jadi macam Ayoh.
Sekarang ni harga semua benda makin lama makin tinggi.” (Ya, kami masih bermentaliti 'makan gaji')
Saya pula menambah.
“Betul tu. Sekarang ni tak susah kalau nak cari isteri yang ada ijazah tapi sanggup berkorban tak bekerja. Tapi seelok-eloknya kena bagi belanja bulanan lah, nafkah biar cukup. Well, teruskan cita-cita awak. Kakngah sokong.”
Axx dah tersipu-sipu.

May Allah guide and help me in fulfilling my roles and responsibility as a mother. Amin.

Mengapa Saya Bekerja

Maknanya, buku ini memang bagus, tetapi bukanlah sangat-sangat bagus, a must-read but not necessarily a must-have.

Saya tergelak. “Eh, belum sempat lukis mata dia. Nanti Ummi tolong lukiskan.”
Munief bergegas mencari pensil.
“Eh, nantilah dulu, Munief. Ummi lukis kemudian.” Hmm, bagaimana ya? Dia tidaklah kelihatan ‘takut’ (spooked), cuma tertanya-tanya (curious) barangkali.

KWSP oh KWSP

I disagree with the move to slash down KWSP contribution from 11% to 8%. It would still be ok with me if this slashing is an option (exception rather than the rule), but then I read in the news that this is automated, and those who doesn’t want to do this would have to fill up form etc (paperwork!) which is a disincentive. This means that more people will save less. Adui.. biar bersusah-susah dahulu, asal bersenang-senang kemudian. Unless, the 3% is diligently channelled to other places for example Tabung Haji.

Baked macaroni

This is one of our favourites. It’s not difficult to make, but it’s a bit tedious, because most of the ingredients needs to be processed first. This portion is quite large, approximately for 12 persons as main course, a suitable size for my big family.

Ingredients:
Macaroni 500g RM4.20
Cheddar cheese 250g RM8.90
Mushroom 425g 3.90
Chicken breast/keel 2 pc RM4.00
Mixed vegetables 500g RM3.20
One large onion RM0.20
6 large eggs RM1.80
Salt and pepper to taste RM0.10
Butter 2 tablespoons RM0.20

Estimated cost: Total RM26.50, Cost per portion: RM2.20
Estimated time: 60 minutes preparation, 20 minutes baking

Instructions:
1. Boil pasta according to packet instructions. Boil the chicken until cooked.
2. In the meantime, grate the cheese, cube the onion (small cubes), and blanch the mixed vegetables and mushrooms.
3. Shred the chicken to small pieces, and cut the mushrooms. Don’t throw away the chicken broth, add this to the pasta for the chicken flavour.
4. Now it’s time to assemble the ingredients! Heat the butter in a large wok or pot, then saute the cubed onions.
5. Then put the pasta, chicken (meat and broth), mixed vegetable and mushrooms in the pot and stir to mix. Season with salt and pepper to taste (can start with a teaspoon of each).
6. Turn off the fire, then add the eggs (beaten in a separate bowl) and half of the grated cheese. Note: it’s important to turn off the fire first, otherwise the eggs will cook and become like scrambled eggs, which we don’t want! The eggs here functions like a ‘glue’ that will keep the pasta together when baked.
7. Pour into suitable ware for baking (I used 3 medium-sized Corning), sprinkle the remaining half of the grated cheese on top of the pasta, and put them in the oven at about 175 degrees for 20 minutes or until the cheese crust on top turned golden brown.

Some additional notes:
Other shapes of pasta is fine too, just don’t choose spaghetti or fettuccini. Fresh mushrooms are better than canned one, of course, but they’re more difficult to find and more expensive too. Some brands come with sliced mushrooms, so this can save time. As with pre-shredded cheese, though of course it’ll be more expensive. Another shortcut is to buy minced chicken. But you have to cook them first (fry them after the butter and onions) before adding the rest of the ingredients. It doesn’t have to be chicken breast or keel, other parts are also fine, you just have to debone them. Use more chicken if you prefer. You can use fresh vegetable instead of the frozen mixed vegetable (which is the most convenient) for example carrot, broccoli, and capsicum. It would be interesting to bake these in individual ramekins, but I don’t have any (yet).

This is my beloved cheese grater, a gift from a good friend some 7 or 8 years ago. I like it because the grater grates right into the container, allowing no spill, and the container comes with the lid (the white one underneath) – such an efficient design. MHH and I both looove cheese but unfortunately cheese (and other dairy products too, for that matter) is quite expensive here in Malaysia, so we don’t have them as often as we’d like.

Of leaders

*
My colleague and I were on our way to see a customer. He related an interesting story. One of the company’s top leaders, M had an appointment with Perak Menteri Besar to discuss on a matter concerning a state land. Dato Seri Nizar had arrived 10 minutes late – he shaked M’s hands and said “I’m sorry I’m late”. M was really taken aback, because this is not a common experience. He is used to top officials being more than an hour late, and didn’t offer any apologies. "What a humble man," my colleague (a non-Muslim) had commented. Such small gestures – but has big impacts. Subhanallah.

*
Our meeting with the customer had just been concluded and we were just chatting when the lady lawyer from the customer’s legal unit exclaimed “0bama has won, you know!” The five of us seemed happy with this news, so I guess we all shared the same favourite. “But he should have a very strong security around the clock, because there will be some white people who would want to assassinate him,” the GM said. I was surprised. Of all things, this is his first response. “But is white supremacism still that bad over there? Isn’t the fact that he has won shown that there is positive change?” I challenged. “Some people would still be very unhappy – they wouldn’t be able to accept it.” Well, all the best to the new president. I hope you will be able to fulfill the people’s high expectations. I know the states are a long way from here, but admit it – what happens in that part of the world does have impacts all over the world.
