Putting away the coins
I once read (or heard) a tip to save money, which is to put away your coins balances. For example, I brought RM5 to lunch and spent only RM4.50. I should keep away the 50 cent instead of putting it back in the wallet to be spent the next day. Sounds petty and small? I disagree. I believe in the adage ‘look after the pennies, and the pounds will look after themselves’ or in our case ‘look after the cents, and the ringgits will look after themselves’.
Since then, I have been putting away my coins, with the help of my two young ones! About once a week, I’ll get them to dunk the coins in their respective Tabung Haji replica. They love it. At first Adik was prone to putting the coins in her mouth, but after several sessions she understood what she was supposed to do with them. Do they think of it as just another ‘shape-sorting/put-in-the-box’ activity? Well, I hope it will instil some ‘mari menabung feel’ for them. Hopefully, they will associate coins/duit with tabung/menyimpan. In any case, the coins saved will go into their education fund :) Sikit sikit lama lama jadi bukit..

True..true..
Kat rumah pun akak suka kutip duit sen-sen yang bersepah & kumpul dalam kotak. Dulu suka kumpul duit sen sebab nak bayar parking. Sekarang dah pakai pas, so tak guna dah duit sen.
But hey, this is a good idea. I should dump my cents somewhere other than my wallet :D
aina ana,
exactly. stash away the coins, 'buang' from the wallet. takdelah berat dan kembung sampai takleh nak tutup hehe..
huhuhu.. tak ajar lagi anak-anak menabung..
aida,
takdelah really 'ajar' pun.. for fun je, but hopefully sikit-sikit dapatlah konsep dia tu hehe :)
Mynie,
Actually, memang boleh save banyak. My husband and I will save the 20 cents and 50 cents. Sometimes, kalau meeting di KLCC, autopay tu kan keluarkan balance in 50 cents, so kadang2 I would actually bubuh duit besar sikit supaya dapat more to save.
Sedar-sedar after 1 year, it came up to about RM300! Terkejut gila kami berdua.
And we keep on doing it sampai sekarang.
ipohmom,
wow - that's almost RM1 per day - banyak tu :) so, i guess this is a 'silent' saving lah.. nothing fancy, tapi ada la hasilnya..
