I love reading, but…
…sometimes I find myself unable to manage my reading properly. I usually read while breastfeeding my daughter, lying down in the bed. Once when I got back from work, and next when I put her to sleep, about 10-20 minutes each session. This routine works well for me. Unfortunately, when I get hooked (usually to a fiction, rarely a non-fiction), I would sometimes spent unreasonably too much time on it (usually on weekends), eager to know what happens next. Then, the laundry can wait. The new recipe can wait. When my kids wants to read with me, I get them each a book and said “Jom kita baca buku sama-sama, Ummi baca buku Ummi, Along baca buku Along, Adik baca buku Adik” instead of reading with or to them! Worse, I tried to arrange for them to entertain themselves or for someone else to entertain them for awhile, so that they don’t kacau me. That’s so bad! I act as if I was back in student days, when the only things that worried me were homeworks and exams (and even then I didn't worry too much about them ;p), when I now have other responsibilities to attend to.
Sometimes, I’d get so involved in a story - I just need to know what happens next, and I would stay up after the kids fall asleep. I, who wouldn’t stay up to finish an overdue report, or to do an overdue house chore, or to do an overdue stock check, would stay up to read a (far from overdue) storybook. I wouldn’t even know how long I stayed up, because I wouldn’t look at the watch before going to sleep, thinking my brain not knowing the time would fool my body clock (yeah right). The thing is, I usually find it harder to fall asleep after my usual bedtime, and to add to that, I would still be thinking about the story I just read. And the next morning, I would find myself feeling tired from not getting enough rest, and even more dangerous, sleepy behind the wheels! In conclusion, I have to learn to control myself, and something that is inherently good, reading in this case, may not be good in totality when not managed properly.
And the book that had me staying up a few nights ago, was A Prisoner Of Birth by Jeffrey Archer. I’ve always liked Jeffrey Archer, and when I read Suraiya’s glowing review, I really wanted to read it. Luckily, I came across a blog selling secondhand books (but the blog no longer exist, somehow) advertising this book for RM18 only, half the original price! (By the way, if you know of any good secondhand-books-for-sale blogs, do let me know!) The blurb in the front page stated “His best in years” and I agree! I had read his previous work The False Impression a few months ago, and this is way better. I had fully enjoyed the story, despite the fact that some parts are too convenient to be true. I accept the work to be just a story, not necessarily a believable one. The story is about a man’s quest to clear his name from a crime he didn’t commit, and to seek revenge on the men responsible for framing him. The story is broken down into five chapters: The Trial, Prison, Freedom, Revenge and Redemption. The story is clever and witty, definitely something that I would read again.

ya allah mynie! akak pun selalu buat cam tu. masa dok baca series twilight tu akak suruh budak2 amik buku masing2 dan baca sendiri2.
hihihih.. padahal nak habiskan buku kita.
btw, pernah try Erich Segal?
ada beberapa buku dia yang i truly love!
ah ah ah. entry ni saya nk bg judul Confession Of A Bookaholic:)
arina,
rasanya belum pernah. nak pinjam/swap boleh? hehe..
m-i-o,
cantik judul tu :)
aiyo, we are all sama lor. we're in this together, so no worry my 'pren'.
got to stay up though tonight (again)...to finish up proof reading buku us.hasrizal. Sob2!
I think it is okay to do that lah mynie. At least, you are inculcating the reading habit amongst your children! :)
Jangan lupa, Pesta Buku is coming up. I will get my one-year stock there! :)
suraiya,
tak sama. your staying up to proofread books scheduled to be published is noble work, mine is a voluntary leisure hehe...
ipohmom,
i hope that inculcating reading habits is true. jgn diorg grudge the books for taking their time with me dah le.. yup, looking fwd to the bookfair too :) (though ada lagi buku yg beli last year belum baca lgi woops ;p)
eh, kat bookcafe ada 15% discounts utk SEMUA buku. agak2 kalo kat Book Fair nanti PTS Publishing ada tak ek?
rasanya saya kena 'bukak puasa' dari Pesta Buku dan yg seumpama dengannya. semalam baca buku kecik Life's Instruction yg tulis begini:
"Buy great books even if you never read them"
jadi - marilah beli buku byk2 walaupun tak sempat baca. kahkahkah
Salam mynie...
A silent reader I am, but on this kind of topic, i rasa nak bersuara la. I'm a book lover jugak..beli buku tapi nak menghabiskan satu2 tuh mmg bercinta. my collections ranging from novels to business books. What is your opinion on biz on sewa buku coz I've started one last year, then stopped due to few reasons. But I'm still dreaming having my own online book rental store, coz I love books. Can you share your experience renting/buying second hand book? coz it will involve postal service a lot, i takut that would be the main hurdle. anyway, my email is suriyanor@yahoo.com. pls contact me and we can share our interest.thanks.
mynie, on this topic, tak tahulah nak komen...hehehe...
Dulu2 masa zaman sekolah rajin jugak baca novel... tapi selepas tu dah takde lagi minat tu....hilang dgn sendirinya, sejak belajar degree. Sekarang ni lebih suka berinternet, baca kat komputer...yet, still benda yang heavy utk dibaca yg saya baca, more towards ilmiah punya benda. My husband always said that novel ni tak berpijak di alam nyata... dia pun dulu suka jugak baca novel. Entahler... banyak yang terpaksa kukorbankan demi masa dgn anak... tapi, still rasa macam tak cukup bagi diorang perhatian jer...hehe... kadang sampai rasa stress, actually sebab terlupa masa utk diri sendiri... need to get some times for myself...Adakah saya dah jadik seorang yang terlalu serius...?kihkihkih...
m-i-o,
yup, pts will definitely take part. they usually offer 20%, so if you have their books in mind, better wait for the bookfair rather than buy online.
haha.. beli jgn tak beli.. (buku tahun lepas oun ada yg belum baca lagi woops ;p)
ummuahmads,
baca buku ilmiah tentulah lebih bermanfaat hehe.. to me, reading storybooks ni hobi je, something i enjoy doing for fun. the internet pun fun jugak.. lain orang, lain minat.. and that's right, we need time for ourselves too. jgn lupa tu..
suriyanor,
thanks for leaving a comment! tak sangka blog ni ada silent reader heheh..
saya tak pernah sewa buku online, offline pernah, zaman sekolah dulu. beli buku secondhand baru first time ni, satisfactory experience. so far belum jumpa sewa buku online, kalau dvd ada. maybe you can view those for some ideas on how they operate.
you're right, postals might be a hindrance, for example kalau receive rm3, sewa rm3, send rm3, that's almost one third the price of a book, mcm tak worth pulak. one way maybe is to encourage people to rent more than one book at one go, then the postal cost will be spread out. but what about the risk of penyewa tak pulang buku? kalau sewa buku offline dia minta deposit, but deposit would be another hindrance.
anyway, i think it's a good idea and can be worked out. i, for one, am interested to be your customer :) saya ada jugak terfikir nak start a not-for-profit book swap online club, tp terfikir jelah, not followed up with action hehe ;p
if i think of anything else, i'll email you. you're welcome to email me too, at simpli.siti@yahoo.com
mynie, yg ni aku pakai name/url sebab takde kena mengena dgn professionku (nanti karang kontroversi lagi)
wow! sewa buku online...never heard of that...interesting...
kalau yg sewa dvd online tu kena bayar fee tetiap bulankan, then u can ask for a number of dvds a month for free (postage pun free)...
tapi buku..rasa macam nak simpan rather than sewa, kalau kena bayar sewa baik pegi library, free je, you still cannot keep the book.. i donno, maybe kena buat banyak advertising kat blog tu so boleh cover postage expenses?
postage utk buku mahal gak, sebab berat kalau nak compare dgn dvd, buatnya buku yg tebal gila...huh?
tapi dulu masa sekolah memang sukalah dgn kedai sewa buku kat subang parade tu, sebab budak sekolah kan takde duit sgt, each book dalam 50 sen je sewa, dahla dia banyak buku series yg fear streetla, nancy drew, penpals etc
ooo mynie, jeffrey archer best yerr...aku tak pernah try pulak, aku nampak banyak je buku2 dia kat carboot, nanti aku trylah satu
aku pun macam kau gak, pasangkan dvd mickey mouse pastu aku duduk baca, paling teruk masa nak habiskan harry potter (yg memang berhantu) dulu
aku baca dalam keta jugak sebab aku takyah drive, yg ni free of guilt, daripada tido...
mynie,
betul laa...it's good jugak kalau ada hobi yang boleh merehatkan macam baca buku cerita...hmmm...
Bas aka Drwati,
Jgn ambik hati... takde kontroversi, hehehe... Cuma kekadang benda tu bermain dlm kepala, so teringin nak tahu kenapa tapi tak tahu nak tanya kat sape... Senyum ok... utk baby dlm perut tu...;)
bas,
like ummuahmads said, mana ada kontroversi.. kita kan berbincang secara sihat dan terbuka hehe :)
i think sewa buku still feasible because ada org2 mcm aku yg tak nak spend the whole price of a book kalau sekadar nak baca sekali. but then again, tiba2 terfikir is it legally allowed or not in the first place. rasa ada terbaca muka depan sthing that says to that effect..
aku still jeles kau dpt beli buku murak2 kat carboot. wey, belikan aku buku jamie oliver secondhand satu. kat sini harga sampai rm150, tak sampai hati aku nak beli..
ummuahmads,
hobi baca buku cerita ni common.. cuba hobi knitting ke, buat cross stitch ke, baru unik sikit hehe ;p
ya Allah, apasal sampai 150? nanti aku cari, bila mak aku dtg sini nanti (masa beranak) aku kirim kat mak aku bawak balik then kau boleh pi amik kat kakak aku kat menara telekom, kau bgtau aku siapa author kau suka (pastu bgtau buku apa yg dah baca so aku tak amik), kalau aku jejalan kat carboot or charity shop aku nampak aku rembatla, baru berapa sen...memang aku bawak list title buku pun bila pegi carboot sebab kakak aku selalu pesan..
semalam aku pg library, pastu tetiba buku si jefferey archer yg prisoner of birth tu terpacul kat depan mata aku (aku tak cari pun)...aku terpikir, eh apasal hah? so aku pun amikler sebab buku tu sendiri dtg kat aku...bacanya lambat lg kot (ada queue buku lain), buku library boleh perap 6 bulan
bas,
wah bestnya kau nak tolong belikan! yay :) pst what's yr email? nnt aku email kat ngkau..
ha lagi satu aku jeles sbb library kat sana best. masa aku student dulu aku lg byk pergi city library compared to uni library hehe ;p
Wish I hv more time for books.
