Muzium Tentera Darat
A few Saturdays ago, we dropped by the Muzium Tentera Darat in PD on the way to an event. I asked CY for the directions the day before, but actually it’s quite easy and there are signboards from the highway.
The indoor displays are organised in modular formats in 8 rooms (if I’m not mistaken), each room bearing an era or a theme, for example Hari Ini, Kesultanan Melaka, Penjajahan Portugis, Penjajahan British, Penjajahan Jepun, Era Kemerdekaan, misi pengaman PBB etc. In the misi pengaman PBB room, I felt quite embarassed because I only recognized one other flag other than our own (kalah dengan Hassan). Looking at the room’s era/theme, it’s obvious that a trip there is useful to complement historical lessons. In fact, while we were there, there was a busload of students in red t-shirts (primary school), running around taking notes (I think the teachers organised a quiz or something together with the museum’s officers). In one of the wartime rooms, there was a display of a bloodied mannequin covered with a flag. One of the students asked me, “Kak, dia tinggal macam ni je ke mayat?” I wasn’t sure, so I told the ‘nicer’ (less horror) answer which is “Taklah, nanti dia tanam lah.” (How nice of her to address me as ‘Kak’ instead of ‘Makcik’ hehe).
My kids may be too young to fully appreciate the indoor displays, but they sure had fun at the outdoor ones, where they placed (old) tanks, jet, plane, helicopter and canons. Frankly, I felt that the museum had exceeded my expectations. The displays were well organised and well presented, and they had good life-size models (for example part of a ship in the Melaka room) as well as touch screen information monitors. They do not charge entrance fees, but there is a donation box in the Era Tentera Hari Ini room. This place is definitely worth a stop if you’re going to PD. We’ll probably drop by again later, when the kids are a bit bigger.
