Carpooling
I thought I have left early but lots of other people had left even earlier. I continued to crawl at less than 10 km/hour. I looked around and saw that (almost) all the cars contain single occupants. Yes - myself included. The thing about carpooling is, the real benefits will only be prevalent if enough people are doing it, there has to be a critical mass. If only a small minority makes the effort to do it, the traffic will still be as bad. The benefit of savings on fuel and toll costs are still not enough to offset the inconvenience of having an inflexible timing (because you have to set the timings with your carpool partners) and to actually find people who live and work near you, at least to me. (Am I just making excuses?)
What if a special lane is dedicated to public transport and carpoolers? (I know this has been suggested and possibly implemented in other countries, but I haven't had time to google them.) Would people adhere to the special lane rules? Does it mean we'd need officers to enforce? (Inefficient use of resources?) Would this encourage people to make the extra effort to carpool? Would traffic just be worse? Would it work?

Sis, it would work if the incentives are good. Dulu, masa kat uni, sapa carpool dapat parking betul2 depan faculty. berebut! :) So maybe, kalau dapat lane special, plus reduce road tax, plus allowance untuk petrol and special parking area - don't you think that would work???
kat manchester ni ada city metroshuttle, it's a free bus system that goes to the many carparks at city edges (+ train stations) and it stops just down office buildings, so people just drive to the edge of town, park their cars, and ride the metroshuttle into the town center
it's FREE, comes every 10mins, reliable
aku rasa cari geng carpool tu memang susah, sometimes people dont just go to and fro work, maybe kena jemput anak, beli groceries etc
x yah mimpi le car pooling kat malaysia ni. dulu kempen kemain suruh rakyat malaysia share keta. habuk xda kesan. Wat peghabih duit gomen je wa kempen. Peh tu special lane utk public transport kt kl pun x mengurangkan masalah juga.
Tahap mentaliti & kesedaran sivik org kita mmg rendah!
ipohmom,
tulah, but all those extra work and incentive/costs adakah akan di-abuse, contohnya? maybe i'm putting a 'blach hat', tp saya agak skeptical dgn implementasi. mcm the result will be less than teh effort put in.. (mengapa sungguh cynical saya ni)
bas,
kat uk byk kan konsep park&ride? kat malaysia, i think the only place yg ada is putrajaya. 50 sen (still not too bad), tak sekerap 10 minutes. tp mcm masih tak perlu sbb putrajaya belum jammed (i think). patut dia cuba utk masuk kl. but i guess for learning/percubaa oklah kot..
suraiya,
seperti komen balas saya pada ipohmom di atas, saya pun sinikal juga. jadi apa cara yang berkesan utk komuniti bersivik rendah ye?
the problem is nak carpooling, nak cari teammates yang ngam agak sukar, plus yang ngam selalunya duduk tempat berbeza.
ummu auni afif,
sekadar nak cari org yg boleh arrange pickup/dropoff points pun challenging, apatah lagi nak tambah satu lagi kriteria iaitu 'ngam'. hehe :)
When i was in the US, specifically Houston, the car-pool lane works like a magic. the road was diamond-shape labeled - fast & clear for car-poolers.
the other trick required is - enforcement. if gov't creates this lane, without enforcement: you know malaysians - they will abuse it. single drivers & motorbikers will flock the lane and leave no space for car-poolers.
this shouldn't take away the need to provide efficient public transport in the first place.
kt ofis niza ramai yg car pool. smpai parking lot pun bergilir2 lah smpai confuse pakcik guard. haha.
zidni,
itulah.. cmn diorg kat usa tu boleh enforce dgn jayanya.. must learn from their success..
niza,
good that it works for them :) kalu mmg duduk dekat2, senang..
